AIHA Chicago Local Section February Event - Full-Day PDC, Non-ionizing Radiation & Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)
The Chicago Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety (GLCOHS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago would like to invite you to a half- or full-day in-person professional development course (PDC) on two important environmental health and safety topics: Non-ionizing Radiation and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
Part 1:
Non-ionizing radiation: Qualitative and quantitative assessment, interpretation, and control for selected operations
Part 1 of the PDC will begin with a review and discussion of three selected topics (and tangential information) in the general area of non-ionizing radiation: Radiofrequency/ Microwave, UV, and important considerations for Lasers. The topics will focus on the frameworks of qualitative and quantitative measurement, ACGIH-TLV interpretation, and control.
Attendees should be familiar with most current ACGIH TLV book and should bring scientific calculators for quantitative problem solving.
Part 2:
PFAS: Background, Regulations, and State of the Science
Part 2 of the PDC will include a presentation and discussion on Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) including the chemical structures, lifecycle, and uses, current and future regulations with a focus on the EPA PFAS Strategic Roadmap, and discussions of key research studies.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
· Explain the primary radiological energy considerations that form generally accepted classifications of non-ionizing radiation;
· Identify operations and applications where Radiofrequency/ Microwave, UV, and Lasers are used;
· Recognize the primary hazards associated with Radiofrequency/ Microwave, UV, and Lasers;
· Use the ACGIH-TLV book for guidance on evaluation of measurable energy and comparison to TLVs;
· Cite general control techniques used to minimize exposure.
· Understand the basic science and chemical structures, lifecycle, and uses of PFAS.
· Identify and locate current and future PFAS regulations and key research studies.
